The purpose of the award is to recognise Responsibility Based Leadership™ taken by Nursing Staff within University Hospital Galway. Any member of the nursing staff can be nominated by her/his colleagues by illustrating how the nominee has shown Responsibility Based Leadership. The initial bursary is made available to nursing staff who have worked in the Cancer Services at Galway University during 2008. Responsibility Based Leadership™ was a core concept developed by Anna May Driscoll a founding Partner in Emerge an international management consultancy. It was based in part in her own experiences as a nurse in the NHS in the 1960’s.
Responsibility Based Leadership’s core principles are firstly that leadership does not come from role or position but is a choice that a person makes to behave as a leader. Secondly, the person takes responsibility for the world around them and not just their own small area. Thirdly, that they take leadership from their expertise and this enables them to challenge across the organisation and up and down the hierarchy.

Colleagues, from Galway University Hospital, nominated Elaine Gaffey for the award. The purpose of the award is to encourage Nursing Staff to take Leadership on their own responsibility over and above the normal call of their duties. It recognises Responsibility Based Leadership™ taken by Nursing Staff within University Hospital Galway.
The award takes the form of a bursary to enable the winner to invest in their further education and learning. Any member of the nursing staff can be nominated by her/his colleagues by illustrating how the nominee has shown Responsibility Based Leadership. Nominees were interviewed to establish how they would use the award to build their learning and Leadership skills. The panel was delighted with the strong Responsibility Based Leadership™ skills shown by all the nominees and declared that any one of them could have been a winner, but ultimately decided that Elaine Gaffey displayed the best combination of taking responsibility and capability of using the bursary to build her knowledge and skills.
